"Mary Kom" is a 2014 Indian biographical sports drama film directed by Anthony D'Souza and produced by Guneet Monga of Prestige Motion Pictures. It follows the life of Mary Kom, who won gold in Boxing at the 2012 London Olympics. The film was released on 5 September 2014 with Aamir Khan playing the role of Mary's coach Dinesh. The plot is based on former Olympic boxing champion Mary Kom's fight against gender discrimination in India's male-dominated society, and her advocacy for women empowerment, female rights and equal opportunities. Mary Kom was born in the Uttar Pradesh village of Jageer, India. Her dad was a police officer and her mom taught in a local school; that was where she received her basic education. As she got older, she became interested in sports—for example, volleyball, badminton and cricket—and was playing for the village team until she stopped at around 17 years old due to her family commitments. She continued playing with an improvised ball made of mud and wood for many years. Mary Kom was bitten by the boxing bug at the age of 14 when she joined a local club called ‘The New Era’. She was coached by her elder brother, who helped her hone her natural ability, and she soon caught the eye of national boxing coach Hemant G.K. It was at this stage where she had to leave home for Mumbai to train at the national camp in Haryana. It was there that she got scouted by former world champion Mary Kom’s coach Dinesh Thaker. At this point, Mary had something close to 30 fights under her belt and had already defeated several boxers on merit. Her father's health began deteriorating, but he insisted that only his daughter should be the one to lead him in death. cfa1e77820
